This is the season where the weather is often unpredictable in the early stages and wind is prevalent. It is the time of germination and planting, when the sap stirs and begins to rise and nature comes back to life from its winter sleep. Efforts spent in spring to prepare the soil and plant with care and awareness will insure reaping a bountiful crop in the late summer as well as avoiding undue work in the summer. This is true both literally and as a metaphor for all aspects of our lives. In Chinese medicine, spring and the wood element relate to the Liver and Gall Bladder and are largely responsible for the regulation of the body. Anger and strong emotions are associated with the wood element, thus it is especially important to remain calm and relaxed. Liver and Gall Bladder problems commonly flair up during this time of year. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are very effective in promoting good health and treating these issues when they arise.

A TCM practitioner has been trained in the entire discipline of Chinese medicine, acupuncture only being a small part of this vast field of study. Therefore, in the United States, many acupuncturists are not TCM practitioners. Typically, medical doctors and chiropractors who use acupuncture have taken short courses of training in order to treat conditions symptomatically; treating the “illness”. TCM practitioners train at least 3-4 years in all aspects of Chinese medicine. TCM seeks to determine the “root cause” of a condition and proceeds toward bringing the body back into balance, supporting its innate ability to heal itself. From this perspective, several people seeking relief from a similar condition may each be treated differently because of their unique constitutions.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is an extremely precise and complete medical system that has been continuously practiced for over 4,000 years and currently treats more than one third of the world’s population. Traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic and modern allopathic medicines are the three major medical systems in the world today. TCM is much more than just acupuncture. It includes herbology, injection therapy, moxabustion, massage (tuina), qi gong and lifestyle counseling for the treatment and prevention of disease, illness and injury. It is very intricate and extensive, requiring many years of study to master and is not just another “bag of tricks” that can be added to any health care profession by way of a 300-hour course.

Integrated Chinese and Western medicine in the treatment of 30 cases of anovulatory infertility

Abstracted and translated by
Michael Johnston L.Ac.

Keywords: infertility, anovulation, yi kun tang, integrated Chinese-Western medicine combined treatment.

On page 34, Vol. 21 No. 5 of the ShanXi Journal of Chinese Medicine Gao Xiu Lin published an article titled “ The treatment of 30 cases of Anovulatory Infertility using a combination of Chinese and Western medicine”. A summary of this article is presented below.

Summary: The objective was to observe the clinical effects of an integrated Chinese-Western treatment of Anovulatory Infertility using a combination of Yi Kun Tang and Clomid®.

Cohort Description
The common criteria of the disease history shared by all subjects chosen for this study included: (1) married for 2 years or longer, normal sex life, not using contraception and not pregnant for 2 years. (2) The basal body temperature was continuous for more than 3 months or the subjects presented as single phase in their charts or examination of the subject within 12 hours of beginning their menstrual cycle showed no separation of the endometrium and no change in the vaginal discharge. The primary diagnosis was kidney vacuity. Excluded were subjects with uterine deformities, immune system disorders and other factors causing infertility. A total of 60 patients who had undergone treatment of Anovulatory Infertility from 6/2002 to 11/2004 were chosen. They were divided randomly into two groups, a treatment group and a comparison group. In the treatment group 18 cases had never become pregnant, 12 cases were previously pregnant, but not for two years. Three cases were 20-25 years old, 13 cases were 26-30 years old, nine cases were 31-35 years old and five cases were 36-40. The duration of the disease was from 2.5-18 years with an average of 7.6 years. In the comparison group 20 cases were never able to become pregnant, 10 cases were previously pregnant, but not for 2 years. Two cases were 20-25 years old, 15 cases were 26-30 years old, 10 cases were 31-35 years old and 3 three cases were 36-40 years old. The duration of the disease was 2.6-17 years and the average was 7.8 years. The two groups were similar and showed no marked differences in their data, therefore they were considered equally comparable.

Treatment Method

On the fifth day of the menstrual period, the comparison group began taking 50 mg of Clomid® , orally, each day for five days. If they did not become pregnant the treatment was repeated for a total of three months and then stopped. They were then observed for three additional months. In addition to the basic treatment of the comparison group, the treatment group added Yi Kun Tang
Shu Di, Yi Mu Cao, Yin Yang Huo, Lu Jiao Pian, Nu Zhen Zi, Chuan Duan 15g each; Dang Gui Bai Shao, Chuan Xiong, Bai Zhi, Mu Xiang 10g each; Zhi Ke 20g. The medicinals were decocted and put into 200ml bags. Beginning on the fifth day of the menstrual period the treatment group, in addition to Clomid®, took 200ml of Yi Kun Tang B.I.D. for 18 days. If they did not become pregnant they repeated the treatment for three months and then stopped. Then they were observed for three months.

Study Outcomes

Cure was defined as pregnant within 6 months. Improvement was defined as the basal body temperature chart showing a bi-phase pattern. No effect was defined as 6 months without pregnancy and the bbt continuing to be single phase. The following table shows the outcome based on these criteria.

Group Number Cured Improved No effect Total effect
Treatment 30 13 15 2 93.3%
Comparison 30 7 15 8 73.3%$

Discussion

Chinese and Western medicine think that obstruction of the fallopian tube causing ovulatory obstruction can possible result from pathologic changes in the pituitary gland. The standard thought in Chinese medicine is to supplement kidney vacuity or related Chong Mai vacuity. This study indicates that Clomid’s ovulatory induction rate was 73.3% and 23.3% became pregnant. The integrated Chinese-Western treatment’s rate was 93.3% and 43.3% became pregnant. Our hospital’s Yi Kun Tang is based on a formula passed down through Dr. Ren Zhi’s family. Si Wu Tang supplements blood, regulates the period and supplements the Chong Mai. Yin Tang Huo, Lu Jiao Pian, Nu Zhen Zi, Chuan Duan and Yi Mu Cao supplement the kidney and regulate the period. Modern medical reasoning indicates that they work similarly to adjust the levels of sex hormones and improve the pituitary function. Moreover, they can return the ovary’s secretion function to normal. Bai Zhi, Mu Xiang and Zhi Ke move Qi, calm smooth muscle convulsions and promote ovulation and fertilization. All of the ingredients together regulate the menstrual period and help the uterus. After observing the treatment group, it is clear that an integrated Chinese-Western treatment using Clomid and Yi Kun Tang showed excellent results.

Do you want to lose weight, quit smoking, not worry in testing situations? Do you suffer from unnatural fears, phobias or anxieties? Do you want to make a change in your life and need a solid and secure starting place? Has your Doctor told you it is crucial to your health to exercise, change your diet and/or lower your blood pressure……? Would you like to improve your physical endurance and performance? Would you like to sleep better, or just be able to sleep through the night? Would you like to keep stress under control, leave the feeling of the past behind, or free yourself from crippling phobias? Do you need to make positive behavioral changes?
If you are really WILLING to make these changes, HYPNOSIS can help!

Hypnosis is a state in which the conscious mind is distracted or preoccupied, allowing a positive statement or suggestion to bypass the critical facility and enter powerfully into the subconscious mind. A highly effective adjunct to conventional medical care, and or acupuncture treatment, hypnosis is rapidly becoming the most sought after modality of therapy today; even the U.S. Olympic Bicycling Team has a staff hypnotist work with each member on focus and performance issues.

During a hypnotic trance a change occurs in the clients thought process; a change which is both powerful and effective. Hypnosis is a mutual consent state that is very safe and extremely effective to those who really desire change! Come in for a FREE 30 minute consultation with Edward Rupert.
